Detox, concept and advantages

With the high intake of industrial foods nowadays, our bodies accumulate big amounts of toxins. In addition to their consequences to health, these toxins also have an effect on the shape of our bodies. Did you ever wonder how a thin person can have a fat belly? Well, the answer is pretty simple: TOXINS! They produce gas and bloat the intestines, which automatically means a fat belly.

What is detox?

It is a very special diet that, applied in a certain period (we’ll cover that later on), helps to cleanse the body from toxins. Those who resort to it generally do it so as to get a flat stomach.

How do you do it?

Step 1: The mono-diet

As indicated by its name, the principle is to only eat a single food, at regular intervals, for 1 to 3 days. This leads to the cleansing of the intestines and the inhibition of the production of undesirable gases.

Apples, grapes, cabbage soup… There is no shortage of foods you can choose for this type of practice.

For example, you eat 3 apples in the morning, at midday, and in the evening. And 1 apple at 10 am and 4pm. This gives you a day where the only food supply is 12 apples.

If you choose this method, you are guaranteed of its effectiveness. However, it is far from being exempt of drawbacks. Deficiencies are inevitable. Try to at least accompany this mono-diet with food supplements rich in vitamins and minerals.

Warning! Don’t use this radical method without a proper medical monitoring. And keep in mind that the effects won’t appear until much later. After trying a mono-diet of apples for 2 days (instead of the aforementioned 3), I was so fed up with this food that I would rather stay hungry and tired than to eat another apple. And it took me months to get back to eating apples without cringing. And this was right after the holy month of Ramadan, so I was no stranger to  deprivation.

Step 2: Eat healthy

The mono-diet is interesting for initiating the work by providing a thorough cleansing. But from here, the real work starts. In order to detoxify the body, one should eat healthy for 6 to 8 weeks; the time necessary to regenerate cells.

To wean-off the mono-diet, it is best to start off by consuming only vegetables (2 days). For 1 to 3 days, the body has lost the ability to digest complex foodstuffs. And the most energy-consuming foods during digestion are proteins of animal origin. So better stick with veggies at the beginning.

Afterwards, the idea is, starting from Day3, you eat healthy for 60 to 90 days. Let me let you in on a little secret of mine: While doing my detox, I had the intention of stopping at the mono-diet. But after eating healthy for the next 2 days, I clung right away to this way of life and I had, unintentionally, adapted a daily healthy diet. Two after, and still going strong. I even created a website about it!


Detox is an interesting practice and an efficient one to purify the body. The mono-diet, a far from perfect diet, has proved to be very efficient, but with no less risks involved also. One should proceed with caution, and preferably with medical monitoring. As for the rest, one only needs to eat correctly to the maximum.
